| Description | This still life is thought to date from the early to mid nineteenth century. Although its composition and technique rely heavily on the traditions of Netherlandish flower painting founded in the seventeenth century, the type of flowers and their lavish arrangement are more consistent with later works. A flourish of nationalist fervour after the deposition of Napoleon in 1815 had revived interest in the artists of the Dutch and Flemish 'Golden Age', influencing a large number of artists painting at that time. |
