| Description | During the late sixteenth and seventeenth century, small portraits of famous people were popular with Italian patrons who collected galleries of famous faces. The Italian inscription on the back of the panel erroneously identifying the sitter as Henry VIII may well confirm such an Italian origin for the painting. The painting was once in the ownership of the Thoresby family, who lived at Cliffe Castle, Keighley, the reason why Bradford Museums decided to buy the painting when it came up at auction in 1989. |
