Description Ionnes Oecolampadius was John Hausschein. He changed his name to the Greek Oecolampadius, meaning 'the light of the house'. A leading reformer and friend of Erasmus, he was appointed pastor of the Church of St Martin and Professor of Theology in the University of Basle. He supported Zwingli on the question of Christ's presence in the Eucharist, opposing Luther and Melanchthon at the Conference at Marburg in 1529. This work is probably derived from a painting by the German artist Hans Aspers, another version of which is in the Kunsthmuseum, Basel. The artist may have copied the composition through the woodcut of Oecolampadius in Theodore Beza's Icones, published in 1580.
